Child car seat or convertible car seat: which one to buy?

The infant car seat is the "shell": it comforts the newborn, works up to 12 months or 13 kg (whichever comes first) and is always installed facing away from the car. Choosing it means accepting two purchases: the child car seat now and a car seat when the baby turns one.

The modern car seat, sold in the 0-36 kg or 0-25 kg ranges, covers all stages in a single product, from the newborn to the child going straight to the seat belt. Until the first year, she also has her back to the movement. Then, it rotates and takes on new positions as the child grows.

The practical difference is in the coupling: the child car seat detaches from the car and fits into the stroller. Did the baby sleep on the way? You transfer the entire shell to the stroller without waking him up, without removing the belt, without picking him up. At the appointment, at the market, on the way home, this maneuver is repeated every day of the first year. You can trust: it's the kind of ease that you only really appreciate after the baby arrives.

Therefore, if you have purchased or are going to purchase a stroller that accepts a child car seat, the ideal is to choose one from the same brand or one that has been proven compatible. Many brands sell the complete set, called a travel system. The car seat doesn't offer any of this: it is attached to the car, and the child goes in and out on your lap.

An important limit: your baby will nap in the car seat during outings, and this is normal. But it is not a sleeping place for routine use, because the curved position does not replace a flat, firm surface.

Always install it in the back seat, never in a position with an active airbag, and read the manual in advance. Installation requires calm and is worth doing weeks before delivery. Only use the reducer that comes from the factory: covers, headrests and generic accessories have not been tested with the equipment and compromise safety.

Avoid second-hand child car seats and car seats: there is no way to check for internal damage to the structure, and most brands' guarantees only apply to the first buyer. And only consider products with the Inmetro seal, because imported products without certification frequently appear on resale sites.

Isofix is ​​the claw system that locks the equipment directly to the car structure. In Brazil, all cars manufactured from January 2020 onwards have inserts in the rear seat. Installing it with the car's own seat belt is also safe, but it depends more on you: the ideal is to check every week to make sure there is no slack. Isofix virtually eliminates this human error, which is why it costs more.

The 360 ​​rotation is another feature that makes it more expensive: the seat rotates towards the door when putting the child in and taking it out. It's pure comfort, not additional security. Evaluate based on your budget and how often the baby gets in and out of the car.
