How to organize baby's clothes by size?

Q: What to do with clothes that are too small?

Remove an item from the current drawer as soon as it becomes too small. Put it in a donation pile, a box for another baby or a resale pile. Mixing outgrown clothes with the current size creates clutter and makes it harder to see what needs replacing.

Q: Do I need hives in all drawers?

The secret isn't folding beautifully: it's for anyone to open the drawer and find the right clothes without making a mess.

Sort clothes into the five sizes for the first year (NB, 0 to 3, 3 to 6, 6 to 9 and 9 to 12 months). Keep only the baby's current size in the main drawer, divided into organizers. Today you only change your wardrobe. The baby's will be different: father, grandmother, godmother and whoever else helps will open these drawers every day. Organizing by size is what allows anyone to look, get the right piece and not mess anything up.

The drawer in use

Choose a drawer, usually the second drawer in the dresser, as the drawer in use: it contains only the items the size the baby is now wearing, organized in hives. The next sizes wait folded in the bottom drawers, ready to go up.

A hive for each type: short-sleeved bodies, long-sleeved bodies, pants, jumpsuits.
A small hive for socks, bibs and hats.
Did you press it? The piece immediately goes to the donation or storage pile.
One piece comes off, another of the next size goes up in its place.

Hives: buy by size, not by name

Organizer sizes vary by brand, so ignore the names and check the measurements. For bodysuits, pants and shorts, each compartment should be about 12 cm wide. Sleepsuits and bulky winter clothes need more space.

12 cm in front for bodysuits, pants and shorts.
15 to 20 cm for jumpsuits; intense cold calls for 17 to 20.
The 10 cm ones are only for socks and accessories.
Measure the drawer beforehand: length and depth vary by brand.
Transparent, seamless (welded) or with bias: both last.

Hangers, baskets and the rest of the closet

In the beginning, very little goes on the hanger: a dress, a dungaree, a more special coat. Even so, it's worth buying the hangers at once, thinking about the upcoming child, because they will last for many years in the same closet.

Velvet children's hanger: thin, takes up less space and holds clothes.
Buy 30 to 40 at a time to keep your closet consistent.
First drawer for hygiene, with rectangular baskets or modular organizers.
Everyday clothes stay in the drawer; hanger is for special pieces.
